     Sharon came to Cape Breton as a teenager, when her father took up a position at the Coast Guard College.  Though Mennonite by birth, she has put down wide roots in the Cape Breton community.  After getting her B.A. at UCCB, she did Master's and doctoral studies at York University, before returning home, where she worked for a time at CBC radio.  Since joining the UCCB faculty, she has served as a one-woman pep squad and social director for the department.

     Specialty Areas: sociology of the family, cross-cultural gender studies, feminist studies, health, illness and medicine, action research.

     Community service: Sharon was a founding member of Planned Parenthood of Cape Breton, has served as its representative to the provincial association, and has been on the board of the national association.  She has served on the board of the Everywoman's Centre, and has worked with innumerable groups seeking to improve the status of women.  She is an active promoter and organizer for many cultural events, including Load of Wood, and helps with the East Coast Music Awards.  She is a long-time board member of "Gimmie Shelter," a local housing co-operative.

     Research: Most of Sharon's research has focused on issues of diversity, gender, and peace.  Much of it is designed to promote social change.
