Anthropology and Sociology Associations, Networks, and Web Sites

     Anthropologists and sociologists have formed many professional associations that offer student memberships at special, reasonable rates.  The range of resources that each association provides varies somewhat.  They typically hold annual conferences and publish newsletters.  Larger associations also publish journals.  Most have web sites that describe the association's activities and services, and explain how people can join the organization.  Most also run e-mail networks that can be useful sources of information on graduate schools, job opportunities, conferences, etc.  Some of these are listed below.

The American Anthropological Association (AAA)  -- an umbrella for many regional and topical associations.
 
The American Evaluation Association (AEA) -- a wealth of information and links for applied researchers
 
The American Sociological Association -- the main professional group for sociologists in the US; especially attentive to students
 
Anthro TECH  -- a private, quasi-commercial company and Web site run by an applied anthropologist; huge set of links
 
Anthropology in the News from Texas A&M University  -- an excellent site providing news stories relevant to the field.
 
Association of Universities & Colleges of Canada (AUCC) -- info on every school plus search engine for specific disciplinary programs at every level.
 
Atlantic Association of Sociologists and Anthropologists (AASA)  -- is especially interested in student members; it encourages students to attend its annual meetings, present papers at the meetings, then submit them to a student essay contest that carries a $100 prize.
 
British Sociological Association  -- a very lively professional organization; thinking about graduate school in the UK?
 
The Canadian Anthropology Society (CASCA) -- the major national association for anthropologists
 
Canadian Applied Anthropology Network (CAAN) -- sends occasional E-Mail messages on a variety of topics, including conferences, useful texts, internships and jobs.
 
The Canadian Evaluation Society  -- multi-disciplinary association of professional "Evaluation researchers"
 
The Canadian Sociology and Anthropology Association (CSAA)  -- the major Canadian association for sociologists; describes the faculty and programs available in Canada.
