B.Ed. Program and teacher licensing in Nova Scotia:
Using the Department's courses for B.Ed. and teacher licensing: Back to Top

Sociology (labeled "SOCO" at Cape Breton University) is a "teachable" subject for purposes of a B.Ed. program and teacher licensing in Nova Scotia.

Anthropology (labeled "ANTH" at Cape Breton University) was added to the list of teachable credits in October 2001, as follows:

  1. Certification for elementary teaching requires 9 credits hours (1.5 full courses) of Social Studies. Anthropology satisfies that requirement.
  2. Certification for secondary teaching requires 6 credits hours (1 full course) of Social Studies. Anthropology satisfies that requirement.
  3. Certification for secondary teaching requires a "minor concentration" of 18 credits hours (3 full courses) in a subject. Anthropology satisfies that requirement.
  • Joint Anthropology & Sociology courses (labelled as "AN/S") are accepted by the N.S. Dept. of Education as either Sociology or Anthropology.

PLEASE NOTE: since October 2001, the N.S. Department of Education has not updated the info about teachable subjects which has been circulating on paper and the web.  Be assured that the inclusion of Anthropology is official.  The provincial Registrar of Teacher Certification notified our department of this in a letter (which was copied to all the B.Ed. universities in the province).

A Revised "So You Want to Be A Teacher?" Guide for Anthro.-Soc. students (& others) at Cape Breton University who want to aim for a B.Ed is available for download here.
