| A Celebration of the work of Austin "Bud" Gallivan | |||

| Whitney Pier is notorious for giving nicknames, and most people know Austin Gallivan as "Bud", a name he has retained since childhood. Born July 18, 1930, Bud spent most of his life in the Pier, "grew up, lived, worked, did it all in the Pier". He has a grade eight education, because, as he says, "In those days you left school as early as possible to earn money". Bud began working at sixteen, eventually becoming a tower operator at the International Piers located at the bottom of Dominion Street where he loaded coal onto boats. He finally retired about nine years ago, after forty years of service as an employee of DEVCO. Mr. Gallivan met his wife when she was visiting her sister, a war bride living in Sydney. Originally from Belgium, Mrs. Gallivan and Bud have three sons, two of whom live in Sydney and work for the Autism Society. A third son resides in Antigonish where he is a doctor.

| Like many Pier artists Bud Gallivan is self-taught. He began drawing and painting at an early age, moving from oils to watercolours, his medium of choice. Much of his art depicts life in Whitney Pier but Bud has painted just about everthing. His philosophy is "if I like it I'll paint it." His work includes portraits and landscapes from camping trips around the Antigonish area in addition to scenes from the steel plant. As Bud says, "I like the steel plant, so I painted the steel plant". | ![]() |

| A member of the Cape Breton Artist Association, Bud Gallivan has exhibited his work at IODE art shows for the past twenty-five years. Most of Bud's sales have been through shows, but people occasionally come to his home to buy pieces. | |||
