1) Physical World no longer seen as organic hierarchy. This had political ramifications. Atmosphere for political democracy.
2) World seen along analogy of machine. "Out there" following mechanical laws that can be manipulated for human use. Francis Bacon: "Knowledge is Power". Wrote science fiction utopian novel, called New Atlantis, where society is organized according to science and everyone is happy, etc.
