Discussion points on Space and Time:
--word "science" not used in the way use it till the 19th century; but the tradition of science goes back to the Greeks --distinction between logos and mythos --no reference to spirits or gods --giving physical explanations wherever possible --importance of math in the explanations --the development of methodologies --a community of like-minded people who share these methodologies and who share goal of trying to understand some aspect of nature (connected to this idea of a community sharing goals is the invention of prizes, like the Nobel Prize (shared values) See here article on previous chart, "Nobel Prize" --criticism of current theories regarded as part of science--built into the process; see here article on previous chart, "New Data on Big Bang" --understanding that scientific theories evolve --following the argument where it goes; the fact that a theory contradicts common sense is not per se an argument against the theory |
