Writing Assignment#2 Natural Science
We have been studying the idea that methodology is the key to what makes science a force in our culture. One central part of that methodology, it has been argued, is the hypothetico-deductive method. This second writing assignment asks you to summarize a scientific (or pseudo-scientific article article). In your summary, you must analyze two arguments in the article that employ the hypothetico-deductive method (or fail to employ the method). In doing this, you must also say what, in your view, is significant about the conclusions of the article. Your paper should have at least the following four parts:
1) Background information, as expressed in the article: How do the questions being raised arise? 2) How are the questions put to the test (or fail to test) the scientific method? 3) How does the method fit (or fail to fit) the logic of the hypothetico-deductive method? 4) What are the possible social implications of the result?
-You should be able to complete the essay in 5 double-spaced pages. -Staple pages (and makes sure they're numbered). -Referencing should follow a standard form (e.g. APA or Chicago Manual of Style). The paper is due on November 23. 5% penalty per day late. No papers accepted after 3 late days. |
