PRESS RELEASE March 2003: Sydney, N.S., Mar.12, 2003 The Cape Breton Universitys Tompkins Institute plans to host an international conference, from June 26-28, 2003. This years conference theme is Entrepreneurs and Community Business. Previous conferences in this series have attracted participants from across Canada, the United States, Spain, Mexico, and the UK. This is Tompkinss fourth annual conference on Community Economics and this year New Dawn Enterprises of Sydney N.S. will partner in developing the event. Through support from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), the Tompkins Institute engages entrepreneurial-minded business students in research, business planning and analysis. In 2000, The Tompkins Institute was awarded over a half million dollars; at the time, this was the largest SSHRC research grant ever received by Cape Breton University. The Institute pursues a broad research mandate focused on community economic development and the knowledge-based economy. It engages in action research that is both experimental while aiming to achieve practical outcomes. The Wentworth, Cape Bretons first condominium, proposed for construction at Wentworth Park, is an example of the action research approach. The challenge faced by the Institute is to find ways of engaging in the knowledge-based economy from a depleted community like Cape Breton. The conference will consist of a blend of theoretical papers, and practically oriented workshops where entrepreneurs, both traditional and community-minded, will be able to share their experiences. Denis Cassivi of New Dawn Enterprises and Peter Fritz of Cape Breton Universitys Tompkins Institute are conference coordinators.
